Long-Haul Comfort That Actually Works
The cabin is a dry, low pressure, immobile environment. Almost everything useful follows from those three facts.

A long haul cabin is pressurised to the equivalent of roughly 1,800 to 2,400 metres of altitude, with relative humidity commonly between 10 and 20 percent. That is drier than most deserts. Add ten hours of sitting still and you have the three variables that determine how you feel on arrival.
Seat choice, by what you want

Two specific things are worth checking on a seat map before paying. Rows immediately in front of an exit sometimes do not recline, and bulkhead rows on many aircraft carry the bassinet positions, which is excellent if you have an infant and less so if you are trying to sleep.
Hydration, and the caffeine question
- A rough target is 200 to 250 ml of water per hour of flight, which is far more than the cart provides. Carry an empty bottle through security and fill it airside.
- Alcohol at altitude has a stronger subjective effect and worsens both dehydration and sleep quality. One drink is fine, three is a bad arrival.
- Coffee and tea are mild diuretics and disrupt sleep timing. The issue is less dehydration than the sleep interference.
- Skin and eyes suffer most from the dry air. Lip balm, moisturiser and glasses instead of contact lenses make a noticeable difference.
- Salty airline meals increase perceived thirst, which is one reason airlines season food heavily. Taste perception drops substantially at cabin pressure.

Set your watch to the destination at the gate
Deciding when you intend to sleep before you board makes the rest of the plan straightforward.

Decline the first meal if it falls in destination night
Ask the crew to skip you. Eating aligns the body clock, so eating at the wrong time works against you.

Block light and sound properly
A contoured eye mask and either earplugs or noise cancelling headphones do more than any neck pillow.

Support the head sideways, not forwards
The head falling forward is what wakes people. A firm pillow between head and window, or a wraparound design, prevents it.

Loosen everything
Shoes off, belt loosened, layers adjustable. Cabin temperature varies through the flight and being too warm prevents sleep onset.

Do not fight it after two hours
If sleep is not coming, get up and walk. Lying awake in a seat produces neither rest nor recovery.
Jet lag, managed rather than cured
The body clock shifts roughly one hour per day without intervention. Eastward travel is harder than westward because advancing the clock is more difficult than delaying it, which is why a London to Tokyo trip feels worse than the return.

- Shift your sleep by an hour a day for two days before departure, in the direction of travel.
- Get outdoors on the first destination morning, even in cloud. Outdoor light is many times stronger than indoor lighting.
- Eat on the destination schedule from the first meal after landing.
- Keep any first day nap under thirty minutes and before mid afternoon.
- Treat melatonin as a timing signal rather than a sleeping pill, and check local regulations, since it is prescription only in several countries.
- For trips under three days, consider staying on home time rather than shifting at all.
Frequently asked
Do compression socks help?
Yes, particularly on flights over six hours and for anyone with circulation risk factors. They are inexpensive and there is little downside.
Is the air on board recirculated?
Roughly half is recirculated through HEPA filters and half is fresh bleed air, with a full cabin air exchange every two to three minutes. Air quality is generally better than most offices, dryness aside.
Should I take sleeping tablets?
Discuss it with a doctor. Sedatives reduce movement, which works against circulation on a long flight, and the resulting sleep is not always restorative.
Which cabin is worth paying for?
On flights over about ten hours where you need to work the next day, a lie flat seat is a genuine difference. Premium economy mostly buys space and recline, which helps but does not deliver real sleep for most people.
