North America to Australia: Choosing the Route

The Pacific crossing is one of the longest routine flights in the world. How you break it up shapes the first three days of the trip.

Los Angeles to Sydney is about 12,050 km and runs roughly fifteen hours westbound. You leave on a Monday evening and land on a Wednesday morning, having lost Tuesday to the international date line. Coming home you land before you left. Neither direction is difficult, but both reward planning.

Dallas to Sydney was for years among the longest routes in the world by distance, and it remains one of the longest regularly operated by a twin engine widebody. Departing from an inland hub adds hours but removes a connection, which is the trade many travelers from the central and eastern United States choose.

The one stop alternatives

  1. Via Auckland on Air New Zealand. Often the most comfortable timing from the eastern United States, with a short onward hop across the Tasman Sea.
  2. Via Nadi on Fiji Airways. A genuine stopover opportunity and frequently the cheapest routing from Los Angeles.
  3. Via Honolulu. Breaks the Pacific into two manageable segments and turns the journey into two trips.
  4. Via Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore or Hong Kong. The long way around, but useful from the west coast when fares are low and worthwhile if you want an Asian stopover.
  5. Via Doha or Dubai from the east coast. Counterintuitive but competitive from New York, since the eastbound routing over Europe and the Gulf is not much longer than the Pacific crossing.

The date line, explained once

Australia's eastern states are 17 to 19 hours ahead of the US west coast depending on daylight saving in both places, and the international date line sits between them. Westbound you skip a calendar day. Eastbound you arrive the same day you left, often earlier in the morning than your departure time.

  • Book hotels for the correct arrival date, which is not the date you took off. This is the single most common booking error on this route.
  • Australian daylight saving runs roughly October to April, which is the opposite of the northern hemisphere and shifts the time difference twice a year.
  • Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so Brisbane and Sydney are not always on the same clock.
  • Check the day of week on your return arrival. Landing on the same day you departed confuses car hire and hotel bookings routinely.

Managing the flight itself

  1. 01

Westbound, treat it as one night

Most departures leave in the evening and arrive in the morning. Sleep on the first two thirds and stay awake for the final meal service.

  2. 02

    Set your watch on boarding

Trivial, but it changes when you choose to eat and sleep, which is the whole battle.

  3. 03

Skip the second meal if you can sleep instead

Fifteen hours is enough time for a genuine sleep cycle. Food is available on request on all these carriers.

  4. 04

    Get outside on arrival morning

Daylight is the strongest signal for resetting the body clock. Sydney or Melbourne in the morning is an easy place to comply.

  5. 05

    Eastbound, expect the harder direction

Flying home across the Pacific tends to produce worse jet lag. Plan a light first day back.

Arriving into an Australian east coast city in the morning gives you a full day of daylight, which is the most effective jet lag treatment there is.

Seasonality and fares

PeriodConditions in AustraliaFare level
December to FebruarySummer, school holidaysHighest, book six months ahead
March to MayAutumn, mild and settledModerate, good value
June to AugustWinter in the south, dry season in the tropical northLower, except school holiday weeks
September to NovemberSpring, reliable weatherModerate, often the sweet spot

The tropical north follows a different pattern entirely. Cairns and Darwin have a wet season from November to April with heavy rain and stinger season on the beaches, so the northern winter is the better time to visit despite being off peak elsewhere in the country.

Entry requirements

US and Canadian citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority, applied for through the official Australian app or website. It is inexpensive, usually granted quickly, and valid for multiple entries over twelve months with stays of up to three months. Do not use third party sites charging a markup for the same thing.

Australian biosecurity is strict and enforced with real penalties. Declare all food, plant material, wooden items and anything that has been on a farm. Declaring costs nothing. Failing to declare can cost a great deal.

Frequently asked

Is a direct flight always better?

Not necessarily. Fifteen hours in economy is hard, and two eight hour sectors with a stopover can be considerably more pleasant for the same or less money.

Which side of the aircraft should I sit on?

It makes little difference on an overnight Pacific crossing. Prioritise a window forward of the wing for sleep, or an aisle if you plan to move around.

How far in advance should I book?

Four to six months for the December to February peak, two to three months otherwise. Award availability on this route opens early and disappears fast.

Can I add New Zealand to the same ticket?

Yes, and it often prices well as an open jaw, flying into Auckland and home from Sydney or the reverse.
