Regional Flying Across Southeast Asia
Getting around the region is inexpensive and frequent. The costs that surprise people are baggage, terminal transfers and separate tickets.

Southeast Asia has one of the densest low cost networks anywhere. AirAsia, Scoot, VietJet, Cebu Pacific, Lion Air and Thai carriers operate a web of short sectors where a two hour flight can cost less than a taxi to the airport. That affordability comes with a specific set of rules that reward a bit of planning.
Choosing a hub
| Hub | Strongest for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore Changi | Connections everywhere, service quality | Highest fares in the region |
| Kuala Lumpur | AirAsia network breadth | KLIA2 is a separate terminal from KLIA |
| Bangkok Suvarnabhumi | Full service and long haul | Don Mueang handles most low cost |
| Ho Chi Minh City | Vietnam domestic and regional | Busy, allow time at security |
| Manila | Philippines domestic | Terminal assignment varies by airline, verify |
| Jakarta | Indonesian domestic network | Domestic and international terminals are far apart |
Baggage is where the money is
Regional low cost fares typically include a 7 kg cabin allowance and nothing in the hold. Weight is enforced, often at check in with a scale beside the desk, and the airport rate for excess is several times the online price.
- Buy checked baggage online at the time of booking, which is the cheapest tier on every carrier in the region.
- Allowances are usually sold in weight bands, 15, 20, 25 kg and upward, rather than per piece.
- The 7 kg cabin limit includes your personal item on most carriers, not in addition to it.
- Adding baggage after booking but before the airport is still much cheaper than at the counter.
- Sporting equipment, surfboards and dive gear have separate pricing and need advance declaration.
Single ticket or separate?
Low cost carriers largely do not interline, so a multi city trip is usually a series of separate tickets. That is manageable if you build the itinerary defensively.
01
Never connect on the same day between two low cost tickets
Or if you must, allow four hours and accept that a delay costs you the second ticket.
02
Overnight at the hub when crossing carriers
Airport hotels near KLIA2 and Changi are inexpensive and remove the whole category of risk.
03
Check visa requirements per country, not per region
ASEAN nationals move freely, others do not. Visa on arrival rules differ substantially between Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
04
Confirm onward travel proof
Several countries in the region require evidence of onward travel at check in. Airlines do enforce this because they carry the return cost if you are refused entry.
05
Keep documents accessible
Passport, onward ticket, and accommodation address. Immigration forms are increasingly digital and often need completing before arrival.
Full service options worth considering
Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Garuda operate the same regional routes at higher prices with baggage, seat selection and meals included. Once you add 20 kg of luggage and a seat to a low cost fare, the gap frequently closes to very little, and the full service ticket brings interline protection with it.
Compare the total, not the headline. On a Singapore to Bangkok sector with checked bags for two people, the difference is often under twenty dollars, and one of those tickets rebooks you free if the flight cancels.
Seasonal timing
| Period | Conditions | Fare pattern |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Dry season across much of the mainland | Highest fares, book early |
| March to May | Hot, building humidity | Moderate |
| June to October | Southwest monsoon on the west coasts | Lowest fares, more disruption |
| Lunar New Year | Regional travel peak | Very high, book months ahead |
The monsoon does not stop flying, but afternoon thunderstorms cause frequent short delays. Morning departures are statistically more reliable during the wet months, which matters when your ticket has no protection.
Frequently asked
Are low cost carriers in the region safe?
The major operators are subject to the same international oversight as any commercial airline, and the large regional groups hold recognised safety audits. Verify individual operators rather than generalising by country.
Can I pay for a bag at the gate?
Usually yes, at the highest price tier and sometimes only in local currency. Assume it will cost several times the online rate.
Do I need printed documents?
Increasingly no, but a few smaller airports and some counters still ask for printed onward tickets or visa confirmations. Carry PDFs offline on your phone as a minimum.
How early should I arrive?
Two hours for regional international, ninety minutes for domestic, and more at Manila and Jakarta where landside congestion is significant.
